VA Loans for Service Members and Veterans

The VA loan program was formed in 1944, and ever since then, it’s helped well over 21 million brave men and women to get the home of their dreams. VA mortgage loans are one of the most popular perks of military service; helping service members and their families qualify for home mortgages by guaranteeing loan portions. It consists of competitive interest rates, and little-to-no down payment required. These loans aren’t government loans. They come through private lenders, including the USAA.

VA Mortgage Eligibility

  • Members of the military, the National Guard, reservists, and veterans are qualified to apply for a VA mortgage loan.
  • Active duty members qualify for the loan after six months of service.
  • Spouses of military members who died or suffered disability in line of duty.
  • Members of the National Guard and Reservists can apply for the loan after 6 years. But if they’re called for duty before the 6 years elapse, they can qualify after 181 days of service.
  • In war periods, active duty Reservists and National Guard members are eligible after 90 days of service.
